A Holding Space for Storytelling, Creativity, and Connection in the Sligo Children’s Community Garden
The StoryShed is a dedicated creative space initiated by artist Ruth Le Gear in the heart of the Sligo Children’s Community Garden. Envisioned as a sanctuary for children — a place for stories, imagination, and quiet exploration — the StoryShed provides a stable base within the garden where artistic and community projects can take root and grow.
The creation of the StoryShed was made possible through the generous support of Creative Ireland, with additional help from Sligo Credit Union, and the tireless fundraising efforts of our local community. In a beautiful gesture of collective care, all the building labour was donated by the amazing dads from the community — gifted time, skills, and dedication that brought the project to life without a single cent spent on labour.
This little structure has become a cornerstone for many of Ruth’s collaborations with the garden, including The Seed Project with the Irish Hospice Foundation and The Intergenerational Podcast supported by The Community Foundation for Ireland. It offers shelter, inspiration, and a sense of belonging — a space where children can gather, create, listen, and reflect.
More than just a physical structure, the StoryShed represents the power of community coming together — where stories are sown like seeds, and creativity is nurtured through generosity, care, and shared purpose.
